| Some of us Florida "Old Timers" still can recall the 'good old days' when we could shoot, dress out and roast a young manatee over a glowing bed of mangrove coals. About dawn on the Fourth of July I slip down the river, pick off a mantee calf with a 22-hollowpoint, drag it up on a sand bar across from Cattle Dock Point in the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers. LAT. 26 degrees 32 minutes North LONG. 82 degrees West We'd rub it down good with a stiff wire brush, dress it out, mount it on a metal spit over a bed of red mangrove coals and let it cook all day long. Hmmm good!
These days I'd be put in jail for having a firearm in my boat, knocking off a manatee and worse of all cutting down red mangroves for firewood.
