[Excerpt]

A tired doctor
gets off the elevator on the third floor of a hospital at 1:17 A.M.,
saunters over to the nurses' station and scans the patients’ charts
before beginning his rounds. While he is at the nurses’ station the
elevator door opens, the doctor turns around to look and is surprised to
see that no one gets on or off.
The startled doctor points out
to a nurse that no one got off the elevator. She explains that it was
the spirit of a patient named Emma who died on the third floor three years
earlier. She goes on to tell him that the nurses believe that Emma’s spirit
was trapped in the hospital because a new nurse didn't know to open a window
in her room to allow her spirit to escape.
Emma makes nightly rounds and visits
with the terminally ill patients. The nurses often hear voices coming
from a patient’s room. When they go into the room to check on the source
of the voices the patient has died, no one is in the room and the window
is always open. Emma’s role is to make certain that no other patient’s
spirit is trapped in the hospital to spend Eternity roaming the hospital
halls looking for a way out.The physician goes from room to room, visits
with each patient and tolerates that Emma is always there just ahead of
him and leaves the window open to taunt him. He pauses outside each patient’s room,
after visiting with the patient, in order to regain his composure and enough
mental strength to enter the next patient’s room. Towards the end
of his rounds he realizes that he has little to do with treating the terminal
patients and Emma calls the shots as to who lives and who dies that night.
The mentally exhausted doctor becomes despondent when Emma explains to
him that it’s her job to keep beds open so that patients
can be transferred up to the third floor from the Intensive Care Unit. If
she doesn’t the ICU will back up into the Emergency Room. Emma flits
back and forth between the Emergency Room, ICU and the third floor helping
patients find peace with themselves and their family.
The physician
discovers that a nurse that worked with him on the third floor of
the hospital for many years is dying of pancreatic cancer in Room 306. When
the exhausted doctor completes his rounds and walks into the open elevator
door a big surprise is waiting for him.
